James is a young man who has just been released from prison, having served time since childhood for the killing of another child.
Burdened with guilt and past memories, James returns to the riverside trailer park where the crime was committed so as to locate the body of the victim. His return brings back some truths buried deep in the muddy soil, affecting everyone around him. During his search, James encounters Damian, a youth who is having trouble with a young criminal from James's past. An unexpected love affair ensues.
Downriver is an intricate drama dealing bravely in themes such as loss, identity, trauma and salvation.
Grant Scicluna creates an atmosphere of suspense taking us to dark places and ultimately making clear that the cruel truth is not easy to leave behind.
Reef Ireland, starring as James, gives an impressive performance. Kerry Fox (An Angel at My Table and Shallow Grave) is fantastic in her role as James' guardian.
