Inside the Chinese Closet
Director: Sophie Luvarà
Netherlands, 2015, 72 min., English and Mandarin w/ English subtitles

Berlinale 2016

This fascinating documentary sheds light on a surprising social phenomenon occurring in China: gays and lesbians who marry and even have children together to spare shame for their families.
Andy's father knows his son is gay, yet insists Andy must marry a lesbian so as meet the conservative social norms of Chinese society.
Cherry has already married, to please her parents, who are now urging her to have a child to stop their neighbors from talking.
As the film unfolds, the immense pressure put on Chinese LGBT people to enter into marriages of convenience is revealed. And whether through illegal adoption or surrogacy overseas, children must be had, allowing the family to save face.
In her film, Italian director Sophia Luvarà gently depicts the stories of Andy and Cherry, who live under absurd circumstances wherein they sacrifice their identities and freedom because of pressure placed on them by the strict Chinese society.
