Arianna is 19 years old, yet is still waiting for her first period.
Her summer holiday is spent with her parents around Lake Bolsena, at the holiday home where they used to live until she was three years old, and where they had never returned up till now.
Repressed memories of the past begin to resurface, and Arianna decides to stay at the lakeside village rather than return to town with her parents. She begins to explore both her past and her sexuality.
In his directing debut Carlo Lavagna asks whether adults have the right to determine the gender identity of intersex children. Young newcomer Ondina Quadri, unsurprisingly the winner of two acting awards in the last Venice Festival, will hypnotize audiences with her enchanting blue eyes.
Arianna is a moving, unexpected film, shedding light on an important issue that is not often discussed.
