This American drama, written and directed by Eli Hershko, is soulful and visually luxurious.
It stars Joslyn DeFreece as Carla, a young transgender woman who makes a living out of online sex shows while dreaming of becoming a shoe designer. She faces hardships from her parents and brother, who refuse to accept her for who she truly is, but has the support of her grandfather (the wonderful Mark Margolis, featured in Oz and Breaking Bad), who nonetheless is not entirely certain just what it is that his granddaughter is going through.
Carla falls for a guy called Sam and enters into a romantic relationship for the first time in her life. She also attempts to help her best friend Cinnamon (played by Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox), a prostitute on New York City's sordid sidelines.
Carla portrays a young woman who refuses to be the victim of her surroundings. It is a touching drama featuring transgender characters that are not often seen on the silver screen, let alone as protagonists.
