Transit Havana

This fascinating documentary reveals an unknown face of Cuba. In Havana, trans women Odette, Juani and Malú await sex-reassignment operations to be performed by world-renowned European surgeons, whose arrival is coordinated by Mariela Castro, daughter of the country’s president. Castro is bringing about a sexual revolution combined with state socialism. Also depicted is the story of Cuba’s first transgender man, who is forced, in his old age, to share a home with his older, intolerant brother. The film sheds light on the new options available for the trans community in Cuba, especially in Havana, but also highlights problems such as lack of tolerance and poverty that drive many into prostitution.
