The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin
Dir: Jennifer M. Kroot
With: Armistead Maupin, Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis
U.S., 2017, 90 min. English with Hebrew subtitles

In association with LGBT Olim

Having previously enjoyed her wonderful films To be Takei and It Came from Kuchar at TLVFest, we now see a third appearance by director Jennifer M. Kroot.
Her new film depicts the life of yet another gay icon, American writer Armistead Maupin, whose Tales of the City series has inspired millions of readers. Kroot’s film looks at Maupin’s life starting from his childhood in the conservative South of the United States, going on to the jungles of the Vietnam War and the gay bath houses of San Francisco of the 1970s, to his becoming a best-selling author and LGBT rights activist.
As in her previous works, this new Kroot film is also fast-moving and humoristic. It features interviews with Maupin himself, his partner, and close friends such as Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis, and Sir Ian McKellen. Maupin’s personal story mirrors the history of the U.S. LGBT community, its social struggles, and the numerous changes it had undergone since the writer’s 1940s childhood to the present day.
