“הדווקאים” מתחקה אחר חייהם של שישה גברים הומוסקסואלים שנולדו בתקופת קום המדינה.
דרך סיפור חייהם מתאר הסרט את החיים המחתרתיים והלא מתועדים של ההומוסקסואלים בישראל בשנות השישים והשבעים; מהתקופה בה הנטייה המינית הייתה לא חוקית ונחשבה למחלת נפש, עד 1979, השנה שבה יצאו מספר אמיצים לכיכר מלכי ישראל על מנת להפגין למען זכויותיהם, וההיסטוריה של הקהילה הגאה בישראל החלה להיות מסופרת ומתועדת.
