A fascinating glimpse into the world of gypsies in Spain. Lola is a tomboy who wants more for herself in life than the neighbourhood where she grew up and is still living in with her conservative family. While helping out at her parents’ market stall, she meets Carmen. What starts off as a friendship between two young women rebelling against conservative gypsy society, develops into a forbidden romance. Carmen is engaged to her childhood friend while Lola dreams of becoming an artist. Both are trapped in the patriarchal, chauvinistic society dominating their gypsy neighborhood. Carmen and Lola will have to risk everything in order to escape the fate awaiting them.
Director Arantxa Echevarria gives us a truly engrossing film with an intoxicating gypsy music soundtrack, an authentic atmosphere and two very powerful performances, bursting with sensual chemistry between actresses Zaira Romero and Rosy Rodriguez.
