Papua New Guinea is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a woman, with 70% reporting that they experienced domestic and sexual violence before the age of 15. The most common form of death in the country is by sorcery and domestic abuse. HIV infection rates are highest in the Pacific area. Because of violence and discrimination, transgender people are homeless, unemployed, excluded from education and medical care and live under the great threat of robbery, rape and murder. This is a country that does not recognize LGBTQ rights in any way.
Surprisingly and unprecedentedly, the legendary artist and singer, the entertainer beloved by the masses, is an activist for the rights of transgender people. Moses Moshanty Tau is considered the music icon of the entire South Pacific. In the fall of 2017 director Tim Wolff came to document Moshanty’s tour and the result is a musical tribute to the career of a transgender activist with a heart of gold and a particularly vibrant voice.
During the journey between the remote villages and towns, Moshanty and her band members reveal their personal story and their struggle as members of the LGBTQ community. It is a story of loneliness and violence but also the admiration of millions of people for a woman with a great personality.
