Berlin International Film Festival 2016 – Teddy Award for Best Documentary

Twenty-five years ago, Janine Livingston's acclaimed Paris is Burning won the Teddy Award.
This year, Swedish director Sara Jordenö brings the colorful youths who participate in Vogue battles in New York City back to the silver screen. Once held on the sidelines, battles have taken a center-stage position and are nowadays held for the benefit of LGBT youth organizations.
The characters, most of whom are African-American, speak directly and unabashedly about the difficulties of daily life, such as living with HIV, transgender discrimination, and drug addiction. As Gia, one of the hypnotizing, inspiring young people shown in the film correctly puts it: Even if same-sex marriage is now legal in the U.S., there's still so much to fight for. Some of their families are also shown, providing the background to their children's coming-out stories. Kiki is a fascinating exposé of cultural wealth composed of fashion, dance and music.
Director Sara Jordenö has created a film that is big on warmth and love, and at the same time sings the praise of the individual.
