The debut film by 25-year old author, actress, playwright and theater and opera director Helene Hegemann is based on her eponymous successful, yet controversial German bestseller (Axolotl Roadkill), which tells the story of 16-year old Mifti, a beautiful and reckless girl. Her mother having died and her rich, eccentric father being preoccupied with himself and his new lover, Mifti is brought up by her older sister, who simply cannot control her. She is aware of the sexual strength that comes with her good looks and spirit of uninhibited youth. She falls in love with an older, elusive woman, an actress called Ophelia, and tests limitations through immersion in Berlin nightlife and extreme parties.
Axolotl Overkill is an orgy of insane talents: a superb soundtrack, spellbinding and upbeat filming and editing, a cornucopia of visual elements, and one amazing young actress, Jasna Fritzi Bauer, in the main role. All come together perfectly under Hegemann’s direction to tell a very human story about a girl in search of recognition and love and the need to let go of the past in order to move on in life.
