Q&A with Gigi Lazzarato after the screening on Friday.
Director Barbara Kopple, who won the Academy Award for her documentaries Harlan County U.S.A. (1976) and American Dream (1990), transfers onto the silver screen the exciting international Youtube phenomenon that is Gigi Gorgeous, providing audiences with an honest, moving film experience, as could be expected.
In 2008, Gregory Lazzarato, a young Canadian diver and Olympic Games hopeful, came out of the water and into the web, launching a series of Youtube makeup tutorials. Unwilling to put up with harassment by his high school peers or internet bullies, Lazzarato emerged as Gregory Gorgeous, coming out as gay. His loyalty to himself inspired his many online fans. Notwithstanding his exhibitionist persona, there was one secret remaining hidden. Then, in December of 2013, driven by the passing of his mother and uploading a video titled I’m Transgender, Gregory turned into Gigi.
This is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous offers a personal look into the courage and daring that had given hope to so many adolescents across the world. Kopple also presents a complex image of the Lazzarato family, in particular of Gigi’s father and brother, who had undergone a process no less challenging. In addition to her study of Gigi’s character, Kopple also offers interesting commentary on the Youtube celebrity phenomenon and its impact on the entertainment industry and society in general. This is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous is a captivating and enrapturing film, which is bound to have you subscribe to Gorgeous’ Youtube channel as soon as the lights are on.
