Will you do anything to make your loved one happy? Even get pregnant?
6 years ago Sarah and Aude met at a club and have been together ever since. Aude accompanied, strengthened and encouraged her partner in his transition. Today he is called Benjamin, a transgender man, a doctor in a pastoral village. Aude, who was a dancer in the past, is now a dance teacher for girls.
When Aude finds out she will not be able to give birth, Benjamin decides to delay the final stage of gender reassignment and get pregnant instead. This puts the relationship of the two to the test. Will they survive the crisis?
The film’s director Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar co-wrote the screenplay with Christian Sonderegger, who documented his brother’s gender reassignment journey in the movie “Coby” which he produced with Mention-Schaar. The excellent actress Noémie Merlant, who is best remembered for “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” plays Benjamin. French singer Soko plays the partner, Aude. Merlant excels in the lead role. In a small supporting role can be found the transgender actor Jonas Ben Ahmed.
The result is a well-made drama that does not slip into sensational, but also does not fall into the niche of an educational outreach film. It is simply a modest, wonderfully filmed, well-made drama that manages to evoke a variety of thoughts alongside an abundance of emotions.
