Imagine what would happen if Todd Solondz directed “The Breakfast Club”. The result would probably be similar to “Tahara”, director Olivia Peace’s debut film based on the witty and well-honed script by Jess Zeidman.
Carrie Lubstein and Hannah Rosen are inseparable friends. When their classmate at Hebrew school, Samantha Goldstein, commits suicide, the two girls go to her funeral as well as to a post-ceremony class, which is meant to be an opportunity for them to understand mourning through their faith.
But Jewish teens, too, are full of hormones and lust, and the fact that they have just finished a religious ceremony and are in a classroom in a synagogue does not stop Carrie and Hannah from experimenting with a kiss, which will turn their world upside down and endanger their friendship.
With the help of a young and fresh cast, a touching and surprising, well-directed visual concept, “Tahara” is new, courageous Jewish cinema.
