Troy (Steve Zahn) and his young son Joe (10-year-old Sasha Knight) are on the run in rural Montana. They think they can reach the Canadian border if they just manage to keep a low profile while traveling north. Sally, Joe’s mother (Jillian Bell) discovers they are missing, and local police sheriff Faith (Ann Dowd) follows in their footsteps. When Faith reveals more details about the case, she realizes that the alleged abduction is more than it seems. Troy tries to free his transgender son from his mother’s zealotry, and faces mental problems himself.
Director Anna Kerrigan directs with compassion and delicacy a portrait of an unconventional childhood experience. The wonderful actors, some of whom are actually more familiar with the comedy genre like Zahn and Belle, provide wonderful dramatic roles here.
“Cowboys” is a film that touches on truths about parenting in an emotional and rare way that just must be seen.
