Joshua Grannell, director of the San Francisco Underground Short Film Festival, will host Mink Stole for an hour-long conversation, before the screening.
Problematic high school student Dawn Davenport is more interested in shoplifting, fighting, cheating and eating in class than in her schoolwork. Not having been given a pair of long-coveted cha-cha heels for Christmas, she runs away from home and becomes pregnant by a hitchhiker. Trying her luck as a waitress and as a stripper, she ultimately turns to crime with two high school friends. Her biggest dream is to become famous, but until that happens she must bring up Taffy, her only daughter, of whom she is not particularly fond. One day her entire world changes as she meets a barber named Gator, who turns out to be the love of her life. She marries Gator over the objections of his aunt, who wants him to be gay. Could Dawn finally have her fifteen minutes of fame?
Female Trouble is truly a Waters masterpiece that appears to be somewhat overshadowed by the success of Pink Flamingos, the director’s film immediately preceding it.
The movie features the three legendary John Waters divas: Divine, Edith Massey as the aunt, and the terrific Mink Stole as Dawn’s daughter, Taffy.
