Holding the Man
Director: Neil Armfield | Cast: Ryan Corr, Craig Stott, Sarah Snook
Australia, 2015, 128 min., English w/ Hebrew subtitles
This heartfelt film adaptation of the 1995 eponymous bestseller features some of the greatest stars of Australian cinema; names include Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush (Shine, The King’s Speech), Anthony LaPaglia (Lantana), and Kerry Fox (An Angel at My Table).
Based on the memoires of Timothy Conigrave, Holding the Man was a touching love letter to the author’s partner of two decades, John Caleo, who succumbed to AIDS. Later made into a successful play, the book is now transformed into this heart-moving movie.
The film portrays the first years of the AIDS epidemic in Australia by describing the love of Timothy and John. Meeting at the age of 15, the two men were in a relationship during times when gay love, indeed gay life, were denounced, and the LGBT community was fighting for its right to exist. Withstanding various difficulties involving their families and the conservative society they live in, the appearance of HIV makes the couple realizes that their biggest challenge is yet to come.
Holding the Man sees leading actors Ryan Corr and Craig Stott deliver moving appearances as the two lovers, with several of Australia’s most notable contemporary actors providing spectacular support.
This film is a true testament to the power of love, and is certain to leave no eye dry in the audience.
