For 18 years Ed Popil lived a quiet and safe life in Rochester NY. During the day he was working in telemarketing, but when the night came he transformed into the drag queen Mrs. Kasha Davis, a housewife from the 60’s that escaped to the clubs to be free from her conservative husband – a tribute to Ed’s mother.
But the enormous success of the reality show “RuPaul’s Drag Race” prompted him, like many others, to try their luck and audition. After several tries Mrs. Kasha Davis finds herself a contestant in the show. Despite being eliminated, Mrs. Kasha Davis begins to perform all over the USA and the world, carrying-on the 15 minutes of fame of season 7. But over time new seasons are being produced and new drag queens join the ranks. Mrs. Kasha Davis will have to deal with the increasing gap between fantasy and reality.
In her film debut, director Angela Washko brings us a bittersweet little pill on the price the reality-show contestants pay for their fame. By the end of this film all you will want is for Mrs. Kasha Davis to come of the screen so you could give her a big hug.
“Workhorse Queen” is a charming, touching and heartwarming film, just like its heroine.
