“Gendernauts” the 1999 documentary film directed by Monika Treut had won the best documentary award in the Teddy competition of the Berlin Film Festival and is considered to this day one of the most groundbreaking and influential films dealing with transgender people.
22 years after that film’s debut, its director meets again the heroes and heroines of that film to see what had changed since their first meeting.
San Francisco used to be, as Annie Sprinkle said, the clitoris of the USA, but today the technology industry has a hold over the city and aggressive gentrification had displaced the old queer community. Under the Trump administration the hard earned transgender rights are in regression. The movie travels between its heroes and depicts quiet and mature snapshots of life of people who formed their identity over the years, developed careers and raised families. The film describes how activism had changed over time and gained new perspectives – such as the relations with nature and growing old.
