Alexander’s identity as a transgender man forces him to run his life on the downlow and be very secretive in his homeland Georgia, since he’s still registered as female. He cannot find a legal job and even a trip to see a doctor can put his life at risk. Alexander had started hormone treatment by himself through information he found on internet forums and with the support of the local transgender community. Out of desperation, Mary, Alexander’s wife, decides to become a surrogate for 12,000$. Their pragmatic plan falls apart when Alexander and Mary both start to develop an emotional bond with the unborn child.
“Instructions for Survival” tells the story of a couple that is fighting against all odds for their love in a very hostile environment.
